Climbing Mountains for BC150

James Coleridge holds the flag of New Westminster on the top of Mount Logan.

James Coleridge of White Rock and Len Vanderstar of Smithers took their pride for B.C. to new heights in honour of the province’s 150th anniversary.

Coleridge and Vanderstar tackled Mount Logan, the highest peak in Canada, carrying flags from B.C. and New Westminster (B.C.’s first capital city) to the summit. The climbing team faced glaciers, hurricane force winds and freezing temperatures to stand on the top of the country on June 3.

This epic journey was part of an educational program supported by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. Students across Canada learned about geography, technology and fitness while they followed the live expedition.

BC150 sponsored the event in 2008, which helps secure the claim that Harrison Hot Springs is the sand sculpture capital of the world.
